Canadian Employment increases by 19,200 in April, Trade Surplus grows.

Canadian employment increased in April by 19,200 workers according to a report released by Statistics Canada today. Canadian employment has gained by 348,000 jobs in the twelve months through April with a participation rate of 64.5 percent for that time span. Economic forecasts had expected Canadian employment to increase by 12,500 workers for the month. Despite the growth in jobs, the unemployment rate increased from 6.0 percent to 6.1 percent "as more people entered the labour force", according to the report. Full time employment posted a gain of over 20,000 jobs in April while part time employment which decreased by 1,400 jobs. The provinces of Ontario and Manitoba led the way in job growth for the month as their employment added 12,200 and 9,000 jobs, respectively.

Canadian international merchandise trade increases in March.

Canada's international merchandise trade surplus increased in March according to data from Statistics Canada. Canada's trade surplus increased to C$5.5 billion in March after a revised surplus of C$4.8 billion in February and marked the largest monthly surplus since May of 2007. Boosting the March surplus was its trade surplus with the United States that reached C$8.6 billion for the month as exports to the U.S. increased by 0.7 percent. Canada registered a trade deficit with the rest of the world for the third straight month with a deficit of C$3.1 billion in March. Exports from Canada increased for the third straight month with a 1.6 percent rise in merchandise exports to C$40.1 billion worth of merchandise in March.
