Australian retail sales increase in March. German sales fall.
Australian retail sales edged up in March according to a report released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today. March seasonally adjusted retail sales increased by 0.5 percent after retail sales registered a 0.1 percent decline in February. Food and household good sales contributed to the increased sales for March as both sectors registered increases of 1.7 percent for the month. Economic forecasts had expected that retail sales would increase by 0.3 percent for March.
German retail sales decrease in March.
German retail sales fell in the month of March according to a release today by the Federal Statistical Office Germany. Retail sales fell 0.1 percent in March after a revised 0.7 percent decrease in February. Compared to March 2007, retail sales have fallen by 6.3 percent and the first quarter 2008 retail sales are 1.2 percent lower than the first quarter of 2007. The fall in the March retail sales was unexpected as market forecasts had expected a 0.6 percent rise.
