U.S. Retail Sales fall, Wholesale prices also drop.
U.S. Retail Sales fell in December according to the Commerce Department in data released today. Advance estimates of December retail sales fell 0.4 percent to $382.9 billion. Despite the drop, compared to December 2006, retail sales are up 4.1 percent and for the three month period from October to December sales were up 4.9 percent compared to 2006.
U.S. wholesale prices declined a bit in December according to the U.S. Labor Department. Wholesale prices decreased by 0.1 percent in December following a 3.2 percent rise in November and a 0.1 percent rise in October. Overall for the entire year of 2007, wholesale prices increased to the highest amount in 26 years. Wholesale price data are a measure of inflationary pressures on producers. See the full report(pdf).
