US News: ADP Nonfarm employment add 40K jobs, jobless claims down 21K.

In U.S. data, private employment news was released today in the form of the ADP National Employment Report. Nonfarm private employment increased from November to December by 40,000 jobs. This follows the October to November revised increase of 173,000 jobs. The services sector showed a gain of 71,000 jobs while the construction, manufacturing, goods producing and financial activities sectors all showed declines.

U.S. unemployment claims decreased last week by 21,000 people to a total of 336,000 according to data released today by the U.S. Labor Department. The prior week had shown a revised 357,000 jobless claims. Workers receiving unemployment benefits for more than one week increased by 46,000 to 2,761,000 in the week that ended December 22th. This is the fourth consecutive week that claims of unemployment benefits for more than one week has increased and is the highest total since the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
