U.S. Retail Sales increase in January.
U.S. Retail Sales increased in January according to a report by the U.S. Commerce Department released today giving a boost to the US dollar. Advance estimates of January retail sales bumped up 0.3 percent to $382.9 billion. The rise in Retail sales beat economic forecasts by the market which expected a decline in the sales numbers. January's increase comes after December's 0.4 percent drop to $381.6 billion and retail sales are up 4.4 percent for the three month period from November to January compared to the same time a year ago. Gasoline sales increased 23 percent in the period from January 2007 to January 2008. Retail trade sales increased by 0.4 percent from December to January and showed an increase of 3.8 percent from the same period last year. Retail Sales excluding cars and gasoline remained unchanged from December.
